What can kill a child’s interest in learning
If a child does not have the motivation to learn then they simply will not absorb any information that you feed them. Sadly it is incredibly easy to kill a child’s interest in learning, you are treading an incredibly fine line and if you cross over it then what could excite a child one day will not excite them the next. Thankfully there are many different ways in which you can ensure that you don’t kill the child’s interest and hopefully give them the willingness to learn.
One of the top reasons why children lose their motivation to learn is because it seems far too much like learning. The learning process needs to be fun, tests of the knowledge are not good, in fact, and they will cause a lot of pressure on the child which will cause them to ‘shut down’. All children are born with an inherent ability to learn from their environment, children are constantly curious. It is once some people hit school age they begin to ‘shut down’ about the world. Not because they are no longer curious but because they don’t want to be told what to learn. In order to avoid this teacher, parent and student can develop fun ways in which to learn. It is ideal to remove testing in an obvious manner.
Everybody is their own unique individual. These means that we all take in knowledge in a variety of different ways, some people are more visual learners whilst others prefer to learn through words others use a mix of the two. Everybody’s learning style is not the same. If you are sharing knowledge in a way that is not compatible with the way the child likes to learn then you are on a quick path to killing their interest. The best way to avoid this is to observe the child through the learning process, you will be able to quickly find out how they work and then tailor their learning around it.
One thing that many parents do is force their own interests upon a child. You should however remember that people like to explore the world themselves. They are keen to develop their own interests, force your own academic ideals upon them and you will not stir up any interest to learn about it. To combat this both parent and teacher can interact with the child and discuss their own interests. You then spur the child’s education on by encouraging them to pursue these interests.
Finally, let them develop their own targets in life and learn things on their own. Nobody likes to be spoon fed, especially a child.
These are just a few of the reasons why children lose their motivation to learn. I think the key thing to remember here is that you should adapt to your child’s own individual learning style. Only by adapting to your child’s needs will you be able to sustain their interest in learning. If they keep this interest then there is a greater chance they will achieve success in their future life.
