Seven reasons babies cry and how to comfort them

A baby crying is perfectly normal, it is the only way that they are going to get the attention of their parents in order to have their needs met. Remember, a baby is unable to do anything for themselves, and thus they will need someone there to help them out. Many parents try to ‘soothe’ their child, however if this isn’t working then you can look at a number of the reasons why babies cry, and how you can comfort them.

Perhaps the biggest reason a child will cry is down to hunger. So if your child is crying then give them some milk, even if it doesn’t seem long ago since their last feed. If the child continues to drink then it is likely they are hungry, this will stop crying eventually.

Your child may be crying simply because they want to cry. This is known as ‘Colic’ and is a condition in many children, although not all of them. You can recognise if this is the case if you are experiencing any of the following:

1.      Your baby is crying much more than normal.

2.      The crying can come and go and there is no real reason for it.

3.      You baby is resisting your attempt to soothe it. If a baby had a need that had to be fulfilled they wouldn’t do this.

4.      The baby may look like they are in pain.

5.      The crying last for several hours a day.

6.      The baby cries more in the late afternoon and evening.

Sadly there is not much you can do if this is the case, it is something that they will ‘grow out of’ though, just remember to check that they aren’t asking for any of their needs to be fulfilled first.

Babies love physical contact, and sometimes they just want to be held. If this is the case then gentle rocking side to side may help with their crying.

Sometimes your baby may be finding it hard to sleep, this could be down to receiving lots of attention from visitors. If that is the case, tae the baby to somewhere quiet where they will be able to settle down much easier.

Your baby could be too hot or cold, this is easy to sort out. Your baby’s room will need to be around 18 degrees constantly, also make sure that you don’t overdress your child, they do heat up fairly quickly!

Not changing a nappy soon enough can result in irritation to your child’s skin, and this will cause them to cry. They may even cry before the irritation kicks in! This problem is easy to spot and deal with, so I won’t give you any hints here.

If a baby is crying in a different tone to what they normally do then it could indicate that they are sick. Call your GP if that is the case and they should be able to help you out.

There are plenty of other ways in which you can help a baby feel comforted. These are some of the most popular ones:

1.      Finding a constant sound for them to listen to.

2.      Rocking them to sleep.

3.      Tummy rubs.

4.      Sucking on something, whether it is your breast or a dummy.

5.      A warm bath may help the child calm down, although make sure it isn’t too ‘hot’ otherwise it could not only set the crying off again, but end up damaging your baby.

Hopefully these tips will help you out, yes, new born babies are hard work, but remember the reward that you are going to get at the end!
