Learning tips for learners of different learning styles
Everybody learns in a slightly different way, this is explains why some people are able to learn much better at school than others. In order to give your child the best chance at education you will need to come up with a strategy that will support your child’s learning preference, if you can do that, then your child will find it much easier to complete their homework. Let’s take a little look at the different learning styles and a few tips you can use.
If your child learns by hearing, saying or seeing words then they are what is known as a ‘Verbal Learner’. This of course means that you will need to use the power of words to teach them. For example the following tips should help you out:
1. Use descriptive language when you explain a concept.
2. Reading a book is one of the best ways in which a child can learn, although writing is also great.
3. Play words game with them, or create crossword puzzles that they can solve.
Logical learners work great with patterns. They are able to reason well, work with numbers and are fantastic at problem solving. This isn’t really too common of a learning style, but these tips should help you out if you do have a child that works in this way:
1. Compare the ideas that you two share.
2. Create a Timeline
3. Use Venn Diagrams to explain concepts
4. Use computers to teach new concepts.
A kinaesthetic learner will need to interact with the world and learn through touch. They will need to interact with what they are learning in order to get how it works. Here are a couple of tips for when you have a child that learns this way:
1. Hands-On Projects that help to illustrate the point.
2. Roleplaying
3. Sculptures to illustrate the situation.
4. Playing games together.
Visual learners look at a situation in order to learn. They are very creative people and they are able to read charts incredibly easily. Here a couple of tips that you can use if you have a visual learner:
1. Draw graphs in order to illustrate concepts.
2. Create posters. This is a common technique used in schools in order to illustrate points. The pictures should help reinforce the concept in a visual learners mind.
3. Creating collages.
An interpersonal learner is one that works best groups. Therefore they are quite clearly much better analysing a concept out loud. These tips should help you out:
1. Review anything that they may be learning orally
2. Debate and discuss issues.
3. Role Play
4. Solve problems together out loud
Intrapersonal learners tend to want to learn alone instead. Therefore you will want to let them learn with very little interaction as they will want to work at their own pace. Some parents like to encourage these learners to keep a diary of what they are learning and then share it at a later date.
Finally, Naturalist Learners glean patterns from the natural world that surrounds them, and for that reason you will want to go with them to interact with nature on a regular basis. They may even learn better if you teach them in natural surroundings.
These are just a few of the tips that you can use to help your child out in the learning process, don’t forget to establish the learning style of your child first though, otherwise you could end up teaching them in the wrong way.
