How to prepare for IELTS

If you are planning to study abroad in either Canada, UK or Australia then you will need to pass an examination known as the IELTS. Now, whilst this is generally a pretty easy exam if you know how to speak English fairly well, many people still fail to pass as they do not do enough preparation beforehand. In this article I want to run you through a few ways that you can start to prepare for an IELTS examination, and hopefully boost your chances of passing!

Firstly, the web is going to be your friend. There is plenty of information out there on the test and you should try to absorb as much of it as possible. Ideally, you want to be looking out for the format of the test more than anything, that way you are going to have a feel for how it will pan out, and hopefully that is going to help you in the long run. If you have a British Council close to you then they may also offer some practice classes as well as some materials which are designed to teach you how to pass the test.

Next, after reading through a couple of practice papers it is likely that you will know what your weak points are.. Therefore it is up to you to start working on them. There are various ways to practice this, and hopefully your local British Council should point you in the right direction. In short, the only way to improve your writing is to write, and the only way to improve your speaking is to speak. You will get better over time!

There are also plenty of learning materials being released every day that can help. Make sure you read English newspapers in order to get a feel for writing, however, you should also pick up on current issues as there is a chance you will be tested on these! In addition to this, dedicate around thirty minutes a day watching British TV shows, especially the news if you are not too good at listening or speaking.

What many people who are doing the IELTS find is that they are unable to complete all of the questions. Do not worry about this, the more you practice, the speedier you are going to get. However, when you are rushing through the examination, try to ensure that you answer as much as possible. After all, the more you answer, the more chance you have of passing!

Finally, make sure you practice your English skills as much as possible. In fact, you can never practice too much! It will be a lot of work to start with, but remember, you are aiming to move to an English speaking country, and thus there is a lot more of this to come! You will learn to love the language, don't worry!

Remember, don't get too hung up on your IELTS score. Work hard and I am sure you will be able to pass it with flying colours.
