How to choose school for your children in Hong Kong

Choosing a school for your child is without a doubt going to be one of the biggest decisions that you are going to make. After all, it is this school that is not only going to help with the education of the child, but also shape how they are going to be as a person in the future. Sure, you will have some chance to influence a lot of how a child behaves at home, however, you should remember that most of the time they are going to be at school, and thus this will have the most influence. So how do you go about choosing a school for your child in Hong Kong?

For most people in Hong Kong, private education is not an option. You will therefore want to find the best possible school for your child. Of course, the search will begin around the local area as quite often you will have very little choice. Remember, every child is different, and you will not know which way your child learns until you begin their education. Therefore you will want to find a school which has both a gifted program, as well as one for special needs.

You should start looking for a school as soon as possible, many months before your child is due to start school. Remember, you are going to be limited by the finances you have available, as well as your location. Your best bet is to grab a number of prospectuses from various schools and have a read through them to find out what sort of things they have on offer. However, do not let this be the extent of your search! Go to the schools, most will have open evenings. You can then discuss your child’s needs with the teacher, find out what the school is about, and of course find out whether it is the right fit for your child.

Remember, at the same time you should take the time to consider what you want in a school, and whether it actually matches up with your ideals. For example, would you prefer a small school or a large school? Are there any particular religious or social values that you are looking to promote in your child? All of these will help contribute towards giving your child the absolute best education possible, and one that conforms to what you want in their education.

These are a few of the things that you may wish to consider when choosing a school for your child in Hong Kong:

1.       Whether there is individual attention paid to your child’s needs. After all, a child’s development happens much faster if their specific needs are met. If they don’t have an individual attention scheme, then check whether they have small classes. This may still provide the benefits that your child will need.

2.       What are the other students like in the school? What is their background? I suggest going for schools that are ‘multi-cultural’. Your child will learn a lot about the world and how to respect others in this school.

3.       What facilities are there? You may have noticed a gift in your child for music at a young age, therefore you will want to choose a school that has sublime music facilities. For most children you will probably want a school which has state of the art computing facilities, after all, this is the type of education that is going to help your child out later on in life.

4.       Teachers, you should communicate with the teachers of a school, find out if they are ‘easy to talk to’ and if possible, try to observe the bond that occurs between teacher and student.

5.       Are parents involved in making decisions in the school?

If you take the time to look into a good school for your child in Hong Kong as opposed to just selecting the first one that comes up, you will end up doing wonders for your child’s education. Remember, this is an important decision so do take the time to have a proper search, you will know when you have found one which resonates with your needs.
