Fun and simple English learning activities

It’s not very easy to teach English or for that matter any other language to students who are not completely involved in the training. You need to encourage them to enjoy the lessons by adding a fun element into the sessions. Fun filled English activities are an efficient means to help students master the nuances of the English language.

Free Writing

You can encourage students to indulge in free writing so that they develop a linking for writing. You should ask the students to pen down their ideas on any topic they please for at least 10 minutes. Instruct them not to focus on the grammar or the spelling, rather let their writing flow. If they hesitate or do not know what to write, then tell them to write about anything which crosses their mind. When you first start this activity some students may need to be prompted. In fact John Holt has himself stood by this technique and stated that it motivates the students to think out of the box and express their thoughts in words. Gene Doty who was a professor at the Missouri University of Science & Technology states that free writing enhances the student’s formal writing skills and helps them become more expressive while writing.

English & Art Activities

You can easily combine art and English to give your students the best. If you take a look at the National Gallery of Art’s program for the middle school students, you will find that they make use of art as well as writing to motivate the students to explore their inner identities. You can even tell your students to draw cartoons or authors of books they are reading. They can make use of their drawings to hold discussions of various significant topics and focus on the tone and style of conversation as well as voice modulation.

Vocabulary Self-Collection

You can spark an interest in building vocabulary by making them select new words and add it to their collection. They can then share these words with their classmates and compile a list of the words shared by all the students. You can even try adding new words to the list every week and make the students speak about these words. They can then try to use these words in their conversations in class before moving on to making use of them outside the confines of the classroom.

The authors of "Teaching English Language Learners," state that this activity is interactive and can make a fun packed and informative session.
